Morning Meditation

I don't see anyone as my enemy. Everyone is my Ram.

— Neem Karoli Baba, as recorded by devotees at Kainchi Dham

Neem Karoli Baba said this during a period when India's independence had brought enormous social upheaval, communal violence, and sharp divisions between religious and caste groups. Devotees who came to him carrying grudges, grievances, and long histories of being wronged would watch him treat everyone — the powerful and the humiliated, strangers and people who had betrayed him — with the same uncomplicated warmth. He was not offering a spiritual concept about forgiveness. He was describing how he actually looked at people, and that directness is what made it land so differently than a teaching about forgiving your enemies.

Reflection

Think about one specific person you are currently angry with or avoiding. What would it look like to treat that person as ordinary and human this week, not as a problem to solve?
