Without the Guru, there is no wisdom; without wisdom, there is no meditation.
Guru Nanak spoke these words in the opening passages of the Guru Granth Sahib, composed in the fifteenth century as he traveled across South Asia challenging religious hypocrisy and empty ritual. He had watched people perform elaborate devotions while remaining unchanged in how they treated others or understood themselves. The line draws a direct connection between having a teacher and actually thinking clearly, suggesting that wisdom is not something you generate alone but something that grows through honest guidance. It is a useful corrective today, when access to information is unlimited but good judgment often feels harder to find, not easier.
Reflection
Think about a decision you are currently working through. Who are you actually listening to, and do you trust that person to tell you the truth?
