The gentleman makes things his servants; the petty man is servant to things.
Xunzi wrote during the Warring States period, a time when China was fractured by constant conflict and political maneuvering, and ambitious men scrambled to attach themselves to powerful lords. He was a Confucian scholar who watched people destroy their inner lives chasing rank, wealth, and approval. This line cuts to the heart of solitude and stillness because it names the real reason most of us cannot sit quietly: we have handed control of our attention, our mood, and our time over to external things, and we keep checking to see what they want from us.
Reflection
Xunzi believed self-mastery starts with noticing what you obey. What specific thing ruled your decisions yesterday?
