He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.
Epictetus said this while teaching in Nicopolis after having been a slave for much of his early life. He knew firsthand what it felt like to have almost nothing and to still choose a disciplined, purposeful way of living. His Stoic philosophy, shaped by Chrysippus before him, held that patience is not passive waiting but an active decision to keep working with what is actually in front of you. That distinction matters today when it is easy to stall on a goal because conditions are not yet perfect.
Reflection
Think about a goal you have been putting off until something changes. What specific thing are you waiting for before you start?
