No One Meets Unchanged
The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.
Jung wrote this line in his 1933 collection Modern Man in Search of a Soul, in an essay on the practice of psychotherapy. He was describing the relationship between analyst and patient, arguing that the therapist cannot stand outside the encounter untouched by it. This came from years of clinical work following his break with Freud, where he saw firsthand that engaging deeply with another person's inner life always leaves a mark on both sides. The insight reaches past the therapy room, reminding us that no real conversation or relationship leaves either person exactly as they were before it.
Reflection
Jung saw every real encounter as a kind of chemical reaction between two people. Which person on my calendar today might leave me changed?
