Walking Each Other Home
We're all just walking each other home.
Ram Dass spent his final decades teaching that serving others and being served are part of the same exchange, a lesson deepened after a 1997 stroke left him partially paralyzed and dependent on the caregivers who became his closest companions. This phrase became central to his later talks and gave its title to the book he wrote with longtime friend Mirabai Bush as he faced the end of his own life. It reframes every relationship, from a stranger on the street to a lifelong friend, as part of one shared journey rather than separate, competing paths. In a culture that prizes self-reliance, it offers a different kind of belonging: needing each other is not weakness, it is the whole point.
Reflection
Ram Dass saw ordinary company as part of one long walk home. Who can I walk alongside today in some small way?
