The Privilege Of Wanting Little

It is the privilege of the gods to want nothing, and of godlike men to want little.

Diogenes of Sinope was banished from his home city after a coin-defacing scandal and arrived in Athens with nothing, eventually choosing to live in a storage jar rather than own a house. He built on Antisthenes' teaching that virtue alone is sufficient for happiness, stripping away comfort, status, and possessions to prove that suffering comes from unmet desire rather than from circumstance. By declaring that wanting nothing belongs to the gods and wanting little belongs to the godlike, he offered a practical path: suffering shrinks as craving shrinks. Today, when so much pain comes from chasing more, his words remain a blunt invitation to transformation through subtraction rather than addition.

Reflection

Diogenes trained himself to need less by choice rather than by chance. What is one thing I can let go of today?
