Throw Away The Cup

A child has beaten me in plainness of living.

Diogenes of Sinope, the Cynic philosopher who lived in Athens and Corinth in the 4th century BC, owned almost nothing beyond a cloak, a staff, a bread bag, and a wooden cup for drinking from streams. According to Diogenes Laërtius, he once watched a boy scoop water from a stream with his bare hands, then threw his own cup to the ground, ashamed to have carried something the child had shown him was unnecessary. Diogenes built his entire philosophy on this kind of subtraction, stripping away comfort after comfort until only what was essential remained, convinced that a life crowded with unneeded things mistakes possessions for purpose. The story lands as sharply now, in an age of accumulation, as a reminder that meaning often grows clearer the less we carry.

Reflection

Diogenes threw away his last cup the moment a child showed him it was unnecessary. What am I carrying today that I don't actually need?
