The Cosmic Dance

For the modern physicists, then, Shiva's dance is the dance of subatomic matter. As in Hindu mythology, it is a continual dance of creation and destruction involving the whole cosmos; the basis of all existence and of all natural phenomena.

Capra wrote this in 1975, drawing a direct parallel between the bronze image of Shiva Nataraja and the particle physics he had studied for years at Berkeley and Imperial College. In Hindu tradition, Shiva dances the world into being and dances it apart again, and the two acts are not opposites but one motion. Capra saw the same pattern in the cloud chamber: particles born and annihilated in fractions of a second, matter never static, always becoming something else. He offered this image to Western readers who tend to see destruction as failure, suggesting instead that endings are simply the other half of creation.
