Become A Child Again
I have had to experience so much stupidity, so many vices, so much error, so much nausea, disillusionment and sorrow, just in order to become a child again and begin anew.
Siddhartha speaks these words after years of wealth, gambling, and pleasure have hollowed him out, when he finally walks to the river ready to end his life rather than continue as the man he has become. Hesse wrote the novel in the early 1920s after his own collapse: his father's death, his wife's breakdown, and his own stretch in Jungian analysis had stripped away the life he thought he was building. The line refuses to treat that stripping away as pure waste, insisting instead that the stupidity and sorrow were the price of getting back to something honest. It speaks to grief today because it does not ask us to skip past the wreckage, only to notice what it might be clearing room for.
