Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.
William James wrote this in the late 1890s, during a period when he was lecturing to exhausted, underpaid teachers who doubted whether their daily work amounted to anything. James had himself struggled for years with depression and a crisis of will, and he came out the other side convinced that choosing to act purposefully was itself the thing that created meaning — not the other way around. This idea cuts against the common assumption that you need to feel certain something matters before you commit to it. James is saying the commitment comes first, and the meaning follows from it.
Reflection
James believed that meaning is something you generate by acting, not something you find by waiting. What is one specific thing you are putting off doing until you feel more sure it matters?
