Know Your Place
American Indians hold their lands—places—as having the highest possible meaning, and all their statements are made with this reference point in mind.
Vine Deloria Jr., a Standing Rock Sioux writer and scholar, wrote these words in God Is Red in 1973 to contrast Western religion's abstractions with Native traditions rooted in actual, physical ground. He argued that sacred meaning for tribal peoples attaches to specific mountains, rivers, and valleys, not to doctrines or symbols floating free of place. He wrote this while Native lands were being dammed, mined, and paved over, insisting that land was a living relationship rather than real estate. His point reaches into the body today: your feet are planted somewhere specific right now, and that actual ground deserves real attention.
Reflection
Deloria believed sacred meaning lives in actual, specific ground rather than abstract ideas. What specific place can I pay full attention to today?
