Bury Before You Bloom
Bury your existence in the earth of obscurity, for whatever sprouts without first being buried produces imperfect fruit.
Ibn Ata Allah al-Iskandari was a thirteenth-century Egyptian jurist who became one of the great masters of the Shadhili Sufi order, after initially resisting the mystics he later came to lead. His collection of aphorisms, the Book of Wisdom, returns again and again to the natural world: seeds, soil, light, water, the body itself. Here he takes the plain fact of farming, that a seed must disappear into the earth before it can sprout, and applies it to the self: real growth means letting effort stay hidden before it shows anything at all. The teaching fits nature and the body together because both obey the same law, nothing worthwhile appears until something first goes under and out of sight.
Reflection
Ibn Ata Allah compares spiritual growth to a seed that must stay buried before it bears fruit. What quiet work can I do today without needing anyone to see it?
