The Only Barrier Is You
Between me and You there is only me. Take away the me, so only You remain.
Mansur al-Hallaj was a Persian Sufi mystic who lived in Baghdad during the ninth and tenth centuries, teaching an ecstatic path toward union with the divine that unsettled both religious authorities and many of his fellow Sufis. He traveled widely across the Islamic world preaching that the self is the only real obstacle between a person and truth, a teaching that eventually led to his execution in 922 CE. This saying captures the heart of his practice: he believed change was not about adding new beliefs or habits but about stripping away the ego that stands in the way. It speaks to adaptation today because it suggests the biggest shifts in our lives often come from letting go rather than acquiring.
Reflection
Hallaj taught that removing the self clears the way for what is real. What could I remove today to make room for what matters?
