Sit With Your Own Meaning

The man who sat on the ground in his tipi meditating on life and its meaning, accepting the kinship of all creatures and acknowledging unity with the universe of things was infusing into his being the true essence of civilization.

Luther Standing Bear wrote this in 1933, decades after he had been sent to Carlisle Indian Industrial School, where Lakota children were stripped of their names, hair, language, and dress in the name of becoming civilized. Looking back over a lifetime spent between two worlds, he rejected the government's definition of civilization and offered his own: a person quietly seated on the earth, reflecting on life and their place among all living things. He was not describing passivity but a discipline of staying rooted in one's own understanding rather than adopting someone else's measure of worth. For readers today, it is a reminder that authenticity is built in quiet moments of reflection, not in performing for approval.

Reflection

Standing Bear believed true identity grows from quiet reflection on one's own life. What can I do today that truly reflects who I am?
