Write, Then Move On

The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all your Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all your Tears wash out a Word of it.

Omar Khayyam was an eleventh-century Persian mathematician and astronomer in Nishapur who calculated a solar calendar more precise than the one Europe would use centuries later, all while writing quatrains that questioned fate and free will under a rigid religious orthodoxy. Edward FitzGerald's 1859 translation carried these lines to Victorian England, where readers wrestling with doubt and mortality found in them a strange comfort. This quatrain insists that every choice, once made, is permanent, and no grief or wit can revise it. It is a call to stop relitigating yesterday and spend today's effort on the line still being written.
