Morning Meditation

The majority of Indians believe that the white man has a special relationship with nature that precludes him from understanding Indian ways, but this is not so. The white man has no special relationship with nature. He has simply never understood it." — Vine Deloria Jr., God Is Red

Deloria wrote this in 1973, during a period when Native land rights were being actively contested and the American Indian Movement had just faced the standoff at Wounded Knee. He was pushing back against romanticized ideas about Native people while also holding Western culture accountable for its actual record. The statement asks us to look honestly at what we claim to know versus what we have actually practiced — which is exactly where integrity lives. Virtue, in this tradition, is not declared through belief but demonstrated through sustained relationship with the world around you.

Reflection

Think about a belief you hold about yourself that your recent actions do not support. Where is the gap between what you say you value and what you actually did this week?
