Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect.

Chief Seattle delivered this speech during treaty negotiations in Washington Territory, when the U.S. government was pressing Indigenous nations to cede their ancestral lands. He was watching his people's way of life face permanent disruption, and he spoke knowing that the Duwamish and Suquamish nations would be fundamentally changed by what came next. The words carry weight on mortality because they reframe what survives us — not individual achievements, but the condition of the living system we leave behind. Legacy, in this view, is measured by what the land, the water, and the community can still do after we are gone.

Reflection

Think about one specific decision you are currently making that will affect people after you die. Does that decision leave things more intact, or more damaged?
