Chief Seattle delivered this speech during treaty negotiations in Washington Territory, when the U.S. government was pressing Indigenous nations to cede their ancestral lands. He was watching his people's way of life face permanent disruption, and he spoke knowing that the Duwamish and Suquamish nations would be fundamentally changed by what came next.
