Attention Is Gratitude

Gratitude is not a passive response to something we have been given, gratitude arises from paying attention, from being awake in the presence of everything that lives within and without us.

David Whyte wrote this as part of Consolations, his 2015 book that takes ordinary words like grief, anger, and gratitude and reexamines what they actually mean. Whyte spent years walking the landscapes of Yorkshire, the Pacific Northwest, and the American Southwest, and much of his writing grows out of that practice of slow, deliberate noticing. He wanted to rescue gratitude from being a polite afterthought, a thank-you said once something good has already happened, and show it instead as a way of paying attention in the present moment. That shift matters this morning because it means gratitude isn't waiting for you later in the day, it's available the instant you look up from this page.

Reflection

Whyte treats gratitude as an act of attention instead of a reaction to good fortune. What am I noticing right now that I'm grateful for?
