Forgiveness Draws You Closer
Forgiveness is a heartache and difficult to achieve because strangely, it not only refuses to eliminate the original wrong but actually draws us closer to its truth.
David Whyte wrote this in Consolations, his collection of essays that reexamine the true meaning of everyday words like grief, anger, and forgiveness. He wrote it pushing against the popular notion that forgiveness is a clean, single act that wipes a wrong away and lets us move on unchanged. Whyte instead suggests forgiveness pulls us nearer to what actually happened, asking us to hold the pain and the person together rather than erase one for the other. That reframing matters this morning because real release may not come from forgetting a hurt but from finally seeing it clearly.
Reflection
Whyte's forgiveness is not erasure but closeness to what actually happened. What old hurt can I look at honestly today?
