Stop Arguing With Reality
When you argue with reality, you lose, but only 100% of the time.
Byron Katie says she spent years in a spiral of rage, depression, and self-loathing before waking up one morning in a halfway house with what she called a sudden, total end to her suffering. Out of that experience she built The Work, a method of four questions for testing whether a painful thought is actually true. This line, one of her most repeated, names what she saw clearly that morning: every grudge and every story of how someone should have acted differently is just a losing fight with what already happened. Forgiveness, in her teaching, isn't something you work up the grace to give someone else, it's what's left over once you stop insisting the past should have gone another way.
Reflection
Katie built her method on four simple questions anyone can ask of a painful thought. What story about someone am I still arguing with today?
