The Harder Kind Of Love

Love in action is a harsh and dreadful thing compared with love in dreams.

Dorothy Day placed this line at the center of The Long Loneliness, her 1952 memoir of the road from bohemian journalist to co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement. She had watched plenty of people talk about loving humanity in the abstract, then flinch the moment love meant living alongside drunks, addicts, and the ungrateful poor in a Depression-era house of hospitality on New York's Lower East Side. Real courage, she came to believe, was not the warm feeling of loving people in general but the daily, unglamorous choice to keep serving the one difficult person standing in front of you. She had already given up a comfortable common-law marriage and her old radical circles for this work, so she knew exactly what the line cost.
