The Only Thing That Changed
The terrorists thought that they would change our aims and stop our ambitions but nothing changed in my life except this: weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, power and courage was born.
Malala delivered this line on her sixteenth birthday, exactly nine months after a Taliban gunman shot her point-blank on a school bus in Pakistan's Swat Valley. She stood before the United Nations General Assembly in New York, still recovering from surgery, and refused to let the attack define her inner state. Rather than dwelling on fear or revenge, she described how the shooting had, if anything, clarified and strengthened her resolve. Her calm in the face of an act designed to terrify her is a striking model of equanimity: the outside world can be violent and unpredictable, but what happens inside you is still yours to shape.
Reflection
Malala's strength grew from what violence could not touch. What is one thing today that no circumstance can take from me?
