It's the little things citizens do. That's what will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees.
Maathai said this while building the Green Belt Movement in Kenya during the 1970s and 80s, a time when her government harassed her, her husband divorced her, and she was jailed more than once for her work. She was not a head of state or a commander. She was a woman with seedlings and a network of rural women who knew the land was dying. Courage here was not dramatic — it was showing up to plant another tree after losing everything, because the work itself was worth doing.
Reflection
Courage does not always mean taking a big public stand. What is one specific action you have been avoiding that you could do today?
