Morning Meditation

June 20, 2026

I have often wanted to drown my troubles, but I can't get my wife to go swimming.

— Jimmy Carter, various public speeches

Carter said this often during his post-presidency years, when he was rebuilding his public identity after a term widely criticized as a failure. He had lost the 1980 election badly, and the world expected him to retreat. Instead he spent the next four decades building houses, monitoring elections, and teaching Sunday school in Plains, Georgia — becoming, by most accounts, the most consequential former president in American history. The joke matters because it shows a man who knew exactly who he was, embarrassments and all, and didn't need the presidency to prove it.

Reflection
