Where Freedom Begins
The boundary to what we can accept is the boundary to our freedom.
Tara Brach is an American psychologist and meditation teacher who wrote this line in her 2003 book Radical Acceptance, drawing on years of guiding students through trauma, addiction, and relentless self-judgment. She noticed that people suffered less from painful events themselves than from the resistance, blame, and rehashing that followed. The quote names a simple law of inner life: freedom is measured by how much experience we can meet without pushing it away. This is the heart of the Second Arrow teaching the Buddha gave in the Sallatha Sutta, where the first arrow of pain is unavoidable but the second arrow of resistance and story is something we add ourselves. Eastern wisdom traditions train practitioners, through mindfulness and acceptance, to feel the first sting fully and let it pass without inviting the second strike.
Reflection
Tara Brach ties real freedom to how much experience one can accept without resistance. What am I ready to accept today instead of fighting it?
