The Action Is Enough

You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty.

— Krishna, in the Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 2, Verse 47

Krishna speaks these words to the warrior Arjuna, who has frozen on the battlefield, paralyzed by worry over the outcome of the war he is about to fight. Krishna's teaching is simple but radical: do the duty in front of you fully, and let go of any claim on what comes after. This is karma yoga, the path of action without attachment, and it is one of the oldest Eastern expressions of present-moment awareness. The mind that keeps racing ahead to results is never actually doing the task at hand; it is only halfway present, half worrying. Eastern traditions from the Gita to Zen agree on this point: the work itself, done completely, is where life actually happens.

Reflection

The Gita teaches that duty done with full attention matters more than its outcome. What is one task on my calendar today that I can do simply for its own sake?
