The Only Door
The present moment is the only moment available to us, and it is the door to all moments.
Thich Nhat Hanh, the Vietnamese Zen monk who spent decades in exile working for peace during and after the Vietnam War, wrote this line in Peace Is Every Step as guidance for living an ordinary day well. He is teaching that the present moment is not one stop among many but the single doorway through which all of life actually passes, since even memory and planning only ever happen now. In the Zen tradition he draws from, mindfulness is not a special state reached through struggle but a recognition that ordinary activity, met with full attention, already holds everything needed. Practitioners train this by returning attention again and again to what the body is doing and what the senses are receiving, using small acts like breathing, walking, or eating as anchors. Nhat Hanh taught that this steady return to the present moment is itself the path to lasting peace, both personal and shared.
Reflection
Thich Nhat Hanh calls the present moment the door to all others. What is one ordinary task today I can do with my full attention?
