The Only Condition
Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything – anger, anxiety, or possessions, we cannot be free.
Thich Nhat Hanh was a Vietnamese Zen monk who lived much of his life in exile, teaching mindfulness to people facing war, displacement, and grief. This passage comes from No Death, No Fear, a book he wrote to help readers see impermanence not as a threat but as the very ground of peace. He is saying plainly that clinging to anger, anxiety, or possessions is what binds us, and that loosening that grip is what opens the door to happiness. In the Buddhist tradition, non-attachment is never taught as not caring; it is taught as caring fully while refusing to let outcomes own us. The daily practice is simple and repeated: notice where the mind is gripping something tightly, and breathe until the grip softens.
Reflection
Thich Nhat Hanh ties freedom to releasing what the heart clings to. What is one thing I can hold more loosely today?
