If you let go a little, you will have a little peace. If you let go a lot, you will have a lot of peace. If you let go completely, you will have complete peace.
Ajahn Chah was a Thai forest monk who taught barefoot in simple huts at Wat Pah Pong, training both Thai villagers and Western monks who came seeking direct, unadorned wisdom. He spoke in plain images drawn from daily life rather than complex doctrine, and this line comes from one such spoken teaching later gathered into print. Here he is stating something almost mathematical: peace arrives in exact proportion to how much we release our grip on outcomes. The Eastern wisdom tradition treats non-attachment not as apathy but as loosening the hand that clenches around how things must go, while still showing up fully for what is in front of us. Practiced daily, this becomes a felt experiment: notice where the fist is closed, and see what happens when it opens even slightly.
Reflection
Ajahn Chah ties peace directly to how much I release my grip. What outcome today can I hold a little more loosely?
