Just as a mother would protect her only child with her life, even so let one cultivate a boundless love towards all beings.

— The Buddha, Metta Sutta (Sutta Nipata)

The Buddha gave this teaching to monks who had fled a forest during their rains retreat, frightened by spirits trying to drive them out. Instead of letting them relocate, he sent them back with this practice of loving-kindness, telling them to radiate goodwill toward the very beings unsettling them. The spirits, once hostile, became protective once the monks began genuinely wishing them well. It's a reminder that real contribution often means bringing care into the exact situation in front of you, not waiting for easier ground.

Reflection

You already know who you'll see today. What is one small thing I can do to make their day a little easier?
