Prove It Today

Philosophy is nothing else than to search out by reason what is right and proper, and by deeds, not words, to confirm it.

Musonius Rufus taught Stoicism in Rome under Nero and Vespasian, twice exiled for refusing to soften his lectures for the powerful. He opened his teaching with this claim: philosophy proves itself only through action, not through argument or intention. The line draws a hard boundary between talking about virtue and living it, between planning to be good and actually being good right now. Stoics treated the present act as the only place virtue can occur, since the past is finished and the future is not yet real. To confine yourself to the present, in this tradition, means letting today's conduct, not yesterday's regrets or tomorrow's plans, be the measure of your character.

Reflection

Musonius judged philosophy not by what is said but by what gets done today. What one task in front of me right now will actually prove what I value?
