Ready To Depart

Since it is possible that thou mayest depart from life this very moment, regulate every act and thought accordingly.

Marcus Aurelius wrote these words to himself while commanding Roman legions on the northern frontier, far from Rome and often near the fighting. He was not a professional philosopher but an emperor using private notebooks to train his own mind under constant pressure and uncertainty. The line says that because death could arrive at any instant, every action and every thought should be chosen as if it might be the last one he ever has. Stoics treated this awareness not as despair but as a tool: remembering death sharpens attention, cuts away trivial distractions, and restores seriousness to ordinary hours. Memento mori, in this tradition, is a daily discipline of perspective, practiced each morning so the day ahead is spent on what actually matters.

Reflection

Marcus Aurelius wrote this as a reminder that any moment could be his last. If today were my last what one thing will I actually do first?
