Hold This Hour

Hold every hour in your grasp. Lay hold of today's task, and you will not need to depend so much upon tomorrow's.

Seneca wrote this near the end of his life to his friend Lucilius, a Roman official stationed in Sicily, in a letter now known as On Saving Time. He tells Lucilius that time is the one possession truly our own, yet most people let it slip away chasing money, status, or plans for later. The line urges seizing today's task directly rather than leaning on some imagined tomorrow that may never come. Stoics treat the present as the only place life actually happens, since the past is gone and the future is not yet real. Confining yourself to the present means doing the one thing in front of you now, fully and without excuse.
