Withdraw The Verdict

Take away your opinion, and there is taken away the complaint, 'I have been harmed.' Take away the complaint, 'I have been harmed,' and the harm is taken away.

Marcus Aurelius wrote this to himself as emperor, often from a military tent on the frontier, using his private notebook to rehearse the discipline he needed to govern well. Here he traces a supposed injury back to its actual source: not the deed done to him but the verdict his mind attaches to it. Remove the opinion 'I have been harmed' and the harm itself has nowhere left to stand. This is the Discipline of Perception at work: the Stoics held that events are raw material, neither good nor bad, until judgment stamps a story onto them. Practiced daily, it means catching the verdict before it hardens, asking what actually happened apart from the label you gave it.

Reflection

Marcus Aurelius traced injury back to the opinion that names it harm. What complaint can I set down today by refusing to call it harm?
