Look Down From The Stars

The earth itself seemed to me so small that I was ashamed of our empire, which touches but a point upon its surface.

Cicero wrote On the Republic during the last troubled decades of the Roman Republic, as ambition and civil war strained the state he had spent his life serving. Near its end sits the Dream of Scipio, where the general Scipio Aemilianus is carried in vision to a great height and shown the whole earth, with Rome's mighty empire reduced to a single point on its surface. The passage argues that fame, territory, and power are tiny measured against the size of the cosmos and the length of time. Stoic writers later built on this exact move: Marcus Aurelius told himself to watch human affairs from above, so weddings, wars, and lawsuits shrink to their true, small scale. Practicing the view from above means climbing that same height today, letting the size of the world put a smaller frame around whatever feels urgent.
