Some things are within our power, while others are not.
Epictetus opens his entire handbook with this line, and he wrote from hard experience — born a slave in Hierapolis, his body once literally owned by another man, he built his whole philosophy on the one thing no master could touch: his judgment, his will, his choices. Later banished from Rome when the emperor Domitian expelled all philosophers, he kept teaching this same distinction from a small school in Greece. We still lose ourselves today chasing what was never ours to control — other people's opinions, outcomes, the future — while the one thing always available to us sits unused.
Reflection
Today's calendar holds outcomes I can't fully control. What is one thing today that's fully up to me?
