Morning Meditation

July 05, 2026

He is a wise man who does not grieve for the things which he has not, but rejoices for those which he has.

— Epictetus, Fragments

Epictetus said this as a former slave who had lived through physical suffering and complete powerlessness over his circumstances. He had no control over his body, his location, or his legal status, yet he built a philosophy around what a person could still choose: attention and response. This quote cuts against the way most of us spend our mornings, cataloging what is missing or what could go wrong. Cato admired exactly this kind of discipline — the refusal to let the uncontrollable become the measure of your day.

Reflection

Think about one specific thing you are waiting on right now. Is your peace today actually dependent on how that turns out?
