Morning Meditation

June 23, 2026

Seek not that the things which happen should happen as you wish; but wish the things which happen to be as they are, and you will have a tranquil flow of life.

— Epictetus, Enchiridion

Epictetus wrote this as a former slave who had lived through conditions he could not control — his legal status, his owner's cruelty, his physical circumstances. He was not speaking from comfort or distance. He was describing a practice he had actually used to survive. The idea is not passive resignation but an active decision to stop fighting reality and start working with it, which is exactly the skill that every major life change — a job loss, a health diagnosis, a relationship ending — demands.

Reflection

Most suffering during change comes from insisting things should be different than they are. What specific situation in your life right now are you still arguing with instead of adapting to?
