He who is brave is free.
Seneca wrote this to his friend Lucilius around 65 AD, near the end of his own life, when Emperor Nero had already turned against him and execution was likely coming. He was not writing from safety or comfort — he was writing from the edge. Gratitude, in this tradition, is not about having good circumstances. It is about recognizing that your inner life belongs to you, and that no one can take that without your permission.
