We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them.

Epictetus, a former slave turned philosopher, understood hardship intimately. He taught that while fortune strips away our possessions and freedom, it cannot touch our inner capacity for virtue. His words remind us that resilience lives not in controlling the world, but in controlling ourselves. This ancient wisdom endures because life's unpredictability never changes—only our power to meet it with intention.

Reflection

Today, notice one frustration or setback. Rather than dwelling on why it happened, ask yourself: What character strength can I demonstrate in response? Your answer reveals your true freedom.
