Love Is An Action
Love is the active concern for the life and the growth of that which we love.
Fromm wrote this in 1956, pushing back against a culture that treated love as something you fall into rather than something you practice. He had spent years studying why people in modern societies felt isolated even while surrounded by others, and he concluded that real love takes effort, discipline, and daily attention. For Fromm, love was never just a feeling you wait to arrive; it was work you choose to do for another person's growth. That distinction matters today, when it is easy to confuse caring about someone with actually caring for them.
Reflection
Fromm insisted love shows itself through action rather than mere feeling. What is one concrete thing I can do today to support someone's growth?
