Connection Over Control
Safety is not the absence of threat, it is the presence of connection.
Gabor Maté, a physician who spent decades treating addiction and trauma in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, wrote this in The Myth of Normal, published in 2022 with his son Daniel. By then he had watched countless patients whose bodies stayed braced for danger long after the danger had passed, their nervous systems shaped by early disconnection rather than present threat. He came to see that healing rarely starts with removing every risk from someone's life, but with rebuilding a felt sense of being seen and accompanied by another person. The line asks us to surrender the fantasy of total control and trust instead in relationship as the real ground of safety.
Reflection
Gabor Maté teaches that real safety comes from connection rather than control. Who is one person I can reach out to today to strengthen that sense of connection?
