The Language Beneath Words

Silence is the language of God, all else is a poor translation.

Unamuno spent much of his life as a man at war with easy certainties, exiled from Spain for years for refusing to soften his criticism of power and orthodoxy. This saying, passed down and repeated by generations of his readers, captures the heart of his great work The Tragic Sense of Life, where he argued that the deepest truths about death, faith, and meaning cannot be settled by clever argument but only felt in the quiet struggle underneath our words. For Unamuno, speech could carry a person only so far before it became noise, a performance of certainty rather than the real thing. He believed that the moment we stop talking and arguing is often the moment real understanding has a chance to reach us.

Reflection

Unamuno believed speech often gets in the way of real understanding. What is one conversation today where I can listen more than I speak?
