What Kind Of Creature Are You

Am I a more complex and violent beast than Typhon, or am I a tamer, simpler animal, with a share in a divine and gentle nature?

This line comes from the opening of Plato's Phaedrus, one of the rare moments where Socrates leaves the city walls and sits on the grass beside the Ilissus River, shoes off, listening to cicadas. Before the dialogue turns to speeches on love, he confesses he cannot yet obey the command 'Know thyself' inscribed at Delphi, and so turns his attention away from myths about nature and toward his own nature instead. He wonders aloud whether he is a tangled, violent creature like the monster Typhon or a simpler being with some share of something divine and gentle. It is a rare picture of Socrates with his body at rest in the natural world, using that stillness to ask the harder question of what kind of animal he actually is.

Reflection

Socrates paused beside a river to ask what sort of creature he truly was. Which part of my nature do I want to lead today?
