Go Like A Shooting Star

I am not going to die, I'm going home like a shooting star

Sojourner Truth spoke these words near the end of her life in 1883, gravely ill at her home in Battle Creek, Michigan, surrounded by family and friends who had gathered expecting grief. Born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree, she had spent decades meeting hostile courtrooms, jeering crowds, and skeptical audiences by staying rooted in whatever moment stood directly in front of her. Even facing death, she refused to retreat into fear of what came next, choosing instead to name the passage itself as bright and immediate. It is a reminder that presence is not reserved for easy moments, it is a practice for the hardest ones too.

Reflection

Sojourner Truth faced her final hours without dwelling on what might come next. What is right in front of me today that deserves my full attention?
