Deep Down We Are One

Deep down the consciousness of mankind is one. This is a virtual certainty because even in the vacuum matter is one; if we don't see this, it's because we are blinding ourselves to it.

David Bohm was a theoretical physicist who worked alongside Einstein before turning his later career toward the philosophical implications of quantum theory, spending decades arguing that separateness is a product of fragmented thought rather than a fact about reality. He wrote this at a time when he was troubled by the political divisions, arms race, and ecological crises of the twentieth century, seeing them as symptoms of people mistaking their differences for the whole truth. In his later years Bohm led dialogue groups built entirely on this premise, believing that when people genuinely listen to each other the sense of separateness starts to dissolve. His words matter now because so much of modern life trains us to sort people into groups, when he insisted the deeper ground beneath us was never divided to begin with.
