Morning Meditation

June 15, 2026

Every man carries the whole stamp of the human condition within him.

— Michel de Montaigne, Essays

Montaigne wrote this during a period of civil and religious war in sixteenth-century France, when the country was tearing itself apart over questions of absolute truth and competing certainties. He had retreated to his tower library, not out of cowardice, but to examine himself honestly rather than add more noise to the conflict. What he found was that self-knowledge required surrender — giving up the pretense that he had everything figured out. That admission is still hard, and still necessary.
