The Final Yes
For all that has been – Thanks. To all that shall be – Yes!
Dag Hammarskjöld wrote this as one of the last entries in Markings, the private journal published only after his death in a 1961 plane crash while serving as UN Secretary-General. For years he had carried the weight of Cold War diplomacy and the Congo crisis largely alone, confiding his exhaustion and doubt only to these pages. By the time he wrote this line, decades of hidden struggle had distilled into a single stance: gratitude for everything already suffered, and consent to whatever came next. It stands as proof that transformation does not erase pain but learns to answer it with thanks.
Reflection
Hammarskjöld turned decades of hidden struggle into one simple word: yes. What is one hard thing today I can meet with that same yes?
