Every Name Opens A World

Everything had a name, and each name gave birth to a new thought.

Keller wrote this just after the famous moment at the water pump, when Anne Sullivan spelled w-a-t-e-r into her hand and language broke through for the first time. Before that morning she had lived sealed off from other minds, unable to connect her thoughts to anyone else's. In an instant she understood that every object around her was tied to every other person who used its name, that she belonged to a shared world of meaning. It is a striking reminder that what connects us to other people is often something as ordinary as a shared word for a common thing.
